Make It Legit series

I found writing a blog exhausting. So I came up with a way to stay motivated: create a watercolor illustration to accompany each one.

Fortune Teller

I used to make these paper fortune tellers all the time in junior high.

Haberdasher Early Evening

While figuring out what to paint for this year for the Works/SJ benefit, I realized I’ve done a few paintings that have aligned into a new series of their own.

Mural: Victory!

Organized by The Exhibition District, the 100Block mural includes paintings by 100 Bay Area artists

Gestures series

Part of the 10th Annual 50|50 Show at Sanchez Art Center. I enlisted 24 models (plus me) for variety including friends, family, and co-workers.

Never Gonna Give You Up

Here’s a triptych of paintings I created based on the theme of the 2018 Works/San José member show: Infinite Memes.

Corridor

I was struck by the lighting and the rhythm of the layout. Two other people were there, quietly enjoying a dinner, so I surreptitiously snagged a photo that I decided to make into a painting.

Elevate

When I thought of the theme, “Elevate”, I thought about how people express themselves with gestures. I picked a movie for each of the 13 days of Cinequest to be represented here by gestures from one of their characters.

A Seat At the Bar

This new painting is based off a photo I took at the Jack Rose, tucked away off Highway 9 between Los Gatos and Saratoga.

Solo exhibition: Prior Art

My first solo show, Prior Art, is now up at Kaleid Gallery in downtown San José from now ’til November 25th. The theme of the show is “analog media manipulation and vintage virtual reality.”

Statement VIII

This one is my photographer friend Jillian who took the reference shot for Statement I. During a different shoot for reference photos I noticed she was wearing a white shirt while I saw her reviewing photos. I asked to include her in this series, and here she is!

Edna and Barbara Have Coffee

This was a leisurely-to-finish painting based on an old photo that I later realized didn’t quite have enough detail in it.

Statement VII

Since starting the Statement series I’ve been on the lookout for interesting variations on white fabrics. It occurred to me that there are a few occupations that include uniforms or articles of clothing that fit the bill.
